J.D. Shapiro, an award-winning writer, director, and actor, performed his successful one-man show, I'm with Stupid, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2022 & 2023. In this hour-long performance, (sometimes almost two hours in 2023), Shapiro reflected on his diverse career in humous manner, which included writing the original screenplay for Robin Hood: Men in Tights and the adaptation of L. Ron Hubbard’s Battlefield Earth - a film that infamously won multiple Golden Raspberry Awards, an honor Shapiro accepted in person.
He discussed collaborations with industry icons like Stan Lee, with whom he was a creative partners with from 2002 to 2016, Mel Brooks, John Travolta. As well as his friendships or association with Jammie Fox, Neil Armstrong, Sir Sean Connery and Michael Jackson. And the encouragement he got from Robin Williams who convinced him, after almost five years of trying to, to pursue stand-up comedy. This led to his status as a Paid Regular at The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip and San Diego after a year and a half in the scene.
